Sometimes working in GIS you feel like no one is listening to you. Like that guy in the design team who is always sending non-georeferenced CAD files for you to “just make it look pretty on a map” or having to use filenames like field_project_15_jun_23_final_final_v3.shp. That’s why Mergin Maps is here for you. We’re not your therapist, but we are here to make collecting data, collaborating and sharing your QGIS projects as painless as possible. Many of you have asked us for a new user permission level for field surveyors and we have listened!
Now when you log in to your Mergin Maps Dashboard and visit the Members tab you will see a new Editor role available for members of your workspace or project collaborators. The idea for the new role is to help project owners protect their projects from unwanted changes accidentally made by field workers. It is similar to the Writer role but has a few more limitations. The new role can be applied for Workspace members which will then apply to all projects in your workspace or individual projects at the Projects | <project_name> | Collaborators tab. This role is designed for users who need to have the ability to carry out survey work or add/edit features on a project but not be able to change the project files or data schema. We would recommend using the Editor role as a default for surveyors or for any users who will not need to be able to make changes to the project in QGIS. Currently, the Editor role is available for Cloud and Enterprise Edition. See the table below which outlines the new permissions for the Editor role:

The decision to add the new Editor role was inspired by the many users who requested it on our Wishlist page. If you are not already a member of our Wishlist page, we’d encourage you to head over to the page and sign up so you can request or vote on features you’d like to see in Mergin Maps. You can also track the progress of other requested features with updates on when they have been selected for consideration or are in progress to be developed for an upcoming release.
